Protect your Baby from Direct Sunlight

Young children especially babies under six months need to be protected from direct sunlight at all times. As children grow they naturally build a higher resistance but still sunburn a lot faster than adults.

Adequate sun protection for your baby will prevent sunburn and conditions including premature wrinkles, aging, and more serious effects like melanoma.

The following guidelines will help protect your baby from the sun allowing both of you to make the most of the good weather:

  • Use a good sunscreen product to protect your baby. If unsure check with your doctor to recommend one that's safe. Before applying test the sunscreen on a small area of your baby's skin.
  • Try and avoid exposure to the mid day sun, ideally between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are strongest.
  • Look for a sheltered location away from direct sunlight. Purchase a beach umbrella for you and baby to sit under. Hats will keep the sun off their head and face if you decide to go for a walk in the sunshine.
  • Light-couloured, tightly woven clothing will help protect your baby's sensitive skin.
  • Sunglasses with UV protection offer your for baby's eyes from ryes from the sun.
